Course Summary

This post qualifying qualification is designed to give learners the specialist knowledge, skills and competences to work as counsellors with children and young people aged 11-18. This qualification will enable successful candidates to work as counsellors with this age group in a range of job and career opportunities, which include but are not limited to:

  • A counsellor employed by a School or College
  • A counsellor in an agency or organisation which specialise in counselling children and young people
  • A private counsellor working for an external organisation such as a school, youth club, wellness/mental health setting
  • An ‘adult’ counsellor in independent practice wishing to extend their work to cover this age range
  • A youth worker in the community
  • An outreach worker with adolescents/teenagers

Topics Covered

By the end of the course, candidates shall have greater awareness, understanding and skills in enabling them to:

  • Work safely, legally and ethically with children and young people (CYP)
  • Facilitate a therapeutic relationship with CYP
  • Understand and work with diversity in relation to CYP
  • Work collaboratively, creatively and flexibly to engage CYP in counselling work
  • Work with self-awareness as a CYP counsellor
  • Use theory, research and skills to work effectively with CYP
  • Monitor and maintain professional practice and effectiveness as a CYP counsellor

Entry Requirements

As this is a post qualifying course, you must be a qualified counsellor/ psychotherapist with membership to a counsellling/psychotherapy professional body (e.g., BACP, NCS, UKCP), following completion of your core qualifying training such as the CPCAB Level 4 Diploma.

You must have also undertaken a minimum of 40hrs of personal therapy during or after your core training.

Students must also be aged 19 or over.

Assessment Process

Students will be assessed through a variety of methods, including:

  • A sessional reflective journal
  • A 3,000 word essay
  • A 2,000 word critique of an excerpt of a CYP counselling session
  • A 3,000 word internally assessed (mock) case study
  • A 3,000 word externally assessed case study
  • Further Study

    On completion of this course, students are eligible to apply for:

    • CPCAB Level 5 Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling
    • Open University Foundation Degree in Counselling
    • CPCAB Level 6 Certificate in Counselling Supervision (with sufficient post-qualifying experience)

    Additional Course Requirements

    In addition to attending the course, students will be required to fulfil the following requirements (which are financed by the student):

    • Engage with 20hrs of personal therapy during the course
    • Facilitate 60hrs of counselling with CYP clients (in a placement setting or in private practice)
    • Engage in clinical supervision with a supervisor experienced in working with CYP clients
